What is Nursing Practice Development?

One definition is:

"Practice development is a continuous process of improvement towards increased effectiveness in patient-centred care. This is brought about by helping health care teams to develop their knowledge and skills and to transform the culture and context of care. It is enabled and supported by facilitators committed to systematic, rigorous continuous processes of emancipatory change that reflects the perspectives of service-users," Garbett and McCormack, 2000


What is the role of the Nursing Practice Development Co-ordinator?

The Commission on Nursing site the main responsibilities of the NPDC as:

Evaluate, develop, implement and monitor nursing practice;
Manage quality assurance programmes to support and insure the highest standards of patient care;
Supervise Clinical Placement Co-ordinators and insure clinical areas provide optimum learning environments and meet the learning objectives of student nurses;
Oversee the organisation of the pre-registration clinical placements
Develop Clinical Nursing Research (dissemination, appreciation, implementation and support the undertaking of research within health service provider).
Continually develop practice in all areas to benefit the quality of patient care

Who is eligible to join the INMPDA?
Membership of the INMPDA is open to Nurses and Midwives who are actively involved in Practice Development.

How do I become a member?
You can do this in a number of ways:

  1. Membership fees are due annually in January and can be paid by Cheque posted to Mr Anthony Fitzpatrick, Treasurer INMPDA, Acute Psychiatric Unit, Galway University Hospital, Galway. E-mail Anthony.Fitzpatrick@mailn.hse.ie Tel: 087 2218643
  2. Contact your Regional Chair, Local Nurse Practice Development Co-ordinator/Facilitator  who can advise you.
  3. Contact any listed members on the website

 

What is the National Executive Council?
How are members of the National Executive Council elected?
The National Executive Council (NEC) consists of Officers elected for a period of 2 years by INMPDA members at the Annual General Meeting of the Association. The offices are the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Vice Sec, Treasurer and Vice Treasurer and Regional Officers elected locally to represent the regions.
 
In addition two further members of the NEC are the Website Liaison Officer and the Public Relations Officer. As these are appointed directly by the NEC to these positions they do not have voting rights on the NEC committee.

How are Regional Officers elected?
Regional Officers are elected through local practice development networks at local Practice Development meetings.

What is the role of the Regional Officer?
The Regional Officer:
Arranges and acts as Chairperson for meetings at local level of members of the IMMPDA
Conduit of information from national to local level and visa versa
Strategic role on the NEC
Decision making capacity on NEC
Link person between local and national practice development projects and initiatives
